Bruce H. Carpenter Non-Traditional Endowed Scholarship

Bruce H. Carpenter Non-Traditional Endowed Scholarship

The Bruce H. Carpenter Non-Traditional Scholarship Endowment was established to honor Dr. Bruce H. Carpenter, president of Eastern Montana College (EMC) from 1982 to 1994. During his tenure at EMC, which transitioned to Montana State University Billings the summer after he retired, Dr. Carpenter provided academic and fiscal leadership which positioned the college for continued growth into a comprehensive, regional urban university. He was a champion for EMC in many ways, but he also understood the power of partnerships and the importance of education to a community. Dr. Carpenter once said, “Education is an investment that goes well beyond the person we teach, but reverberates throughout the community in which he or she participates.” Dr. Carpenter passed away in January 2009 after an illness. He was 76. The first scholarship was awarded in academic year 1995-1996.

Impact

“I chose MSUB as the school I want to attend because they have a long-standing reputation as a top school in Montana and are always pushing to provide the highest level of education for their students. As a life-long Montanan with roots in Billings it only makes sense to use the excellent opportunity that I have in my backyard… I am truly grateful to you for this generous gift. As a single mother who has been out of school for 15 years, I am very thankful for your understanding of the need for opportunities like the one you have provided to me through this endowment. Now, with your support, I am closer to reaching my goals for the future.” – Jenifer B., Pre-Professional Nursing major
