Carl and Barbara Ueland
Carl and Barbara Ueland are true philanthropists. Carl is also a 1970 alumnus of Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings). They support organizations important to them. They give back because it is the right thing to do. If they do well financially, they invest in a variety of charities, including significant contributions to Carl’s alma mater and to the students who attend MSU Billings.
Using his knowledge of botany, biology and chemistry that he gained from his degree, Carl was instrumental in determining the chemical compositions of fertilizers to improve their effectiveness for nutrients for plants. Products that have been enhanced by his products include wheat, corn, grapes, almonds and most food agriculture plants we know. His business, Actagro LLC, has been national for many years and recently went international. Through Carl’s generosity, students majoring in biology at MSU Billings will receive much needed financial assistance. The first Biology Scholarships were awarded in academic year 2014-2015.
While studying at then EMC, Carl participated in cross country and track as well as student government. He majored in biology with a minor in chemistry. After graduation in 1970, he used the knowledge and skills he gained to create successful businesses. In 2016, the Uelands gave a generous contribution to fund scholarships for MSU Billings student athletes who participate in specific intercollegiate athletic sports. The first Ueland Athletic Scholarships were awarded in academic year 2016-2017.
Impact
“Many students — myself included — don’t have the resources to not only fund their education, but support themselves at the same time. The brilliant minds of the future are often lost in the financial turmoil caused by a scholastic undertaking like college. It is generous souls like yours that help me see the light at the end of the tunnel. Not only does this gift mean a little less time at work and a little more for schoolwork, but serves as an example to me that regardless of financial standing there is still hope to achieve my dreams. Others have done it; so can I.” – David F., Biology major with Medical Laboratory Science option
