Department of Music

The Department of Music educates musicians by combining a thorough professional training with a sound general education. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the MSU Billings Department of Music stresses high standards of performance, a strong theoretical background, a broad exposure to music history, opportunities in pedagogy, and a significant encounter with other academic disciplines. The varied functions of music in the world today present many interesting and challenging opportunities to students as teachers, performers, creative artists and employees in the music industry. Through an emphasis in music history and theory as well as performance instruction and participation in various ensembles, students are prepared for graduate study, studio teaching, teaching in the public schools, and employment in the field of music.

In 1987, the Music Department Scholarship fund was established to provide financial assistance to music majors at MSU Billings.

Impact

“From the bottom of not only my heart, but the hearts of my family, my closest family of friends, and those that I work very closely with: thank you. Thank you for the scholarship, and showing that you believe in the power of goodness and compassion in artists like me who are so young and unprepared for the world that approaches. Thank you for offering the music business option as well, without it I would be lost in a sea of business, but with it I feel as if I really can change the world. The music department, faculty, curriculum, and finally scholarships have changed my life forever, and I will never forget that. I promise to use the tools that you have provided me to impact the entire world in the most positive way I can. Thank you.” — Darryn L., Music Business major
