E. Lyle Cooper Memorial English Endowed Scholarship

E. Lyle Cooper Memorial English Endowed Scholarship

E. Lyle Cooper, Emeritus Professor of English, taught at Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings) from 1947-1972. Mr. Cooper passed away December 31, 1994. In his memory, family and friends established the E. Lyle Cooper Memorial Scholarship in English in 1995. The first scholarship was awarded in 2001-2002. One of his former students wrote “Mr. Cooper started his classes quietly and slowly building up to his ‘crescendo.’ Having the full attention of the class, he would start rocking on his toes and say ‘You young things,’ and proceed to expound with his homely, dry witticism of the moment — his way of counseling the youth without appearing to be offering advice. True, he did not have a doctorate, he did not need it. He was a teacher, counselor, and a friend.”

Impact

“My involvement on campus would not be possible without scholarships like the E. Lyle Cooper Memorial English Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my classwork and continue to be involved on campus. I am truly honored by and grateful for this award. Thank you for selecting me to receive this scholarship, and because of it, I will be able to maintain my student involvement on campus next year while pursuing my degree in English.” – Shiloh S., English major with a Teaching option
