Education Is Our New Buffalo Scholarship

Education Is Our New Buffalo Scholarship

In April 2011, the MSU Billings Office of American Indian Outreach launched a new scholarship campaign to earn money for American Indian students who attend MSU Billings. The campaign, held during the 2011 MSU Billings Powwow, was called Education is Our New Buffalo. Proceeds from the sale of powwow programs, tee shirts, 50/50 tickets, dropping money in the blanket dances, and buying raffle tickets were used to help establish the scholarship. In addition, the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council donated a buffalo to help support the scholarship. This scholarship goes towards the aid of current and new Native American students attending MSU Billings. “Education is your greatest weapon. With education you are the white man’s equal, without education you are his victim and so shall remain all of your lives. Study, learn, help one another always. Remember there is only poverty and misery in idleness and dreams, but in work there is self-respect and independence.” — Chief Plenty Coups

Impact

“I am greatly appreciative to have been chosen for the Education is Our New Buffalo Scholarship. This scholarship money will positively help me stay focused on my school work and grades while knowing I am not gaining more debt. Being acknowledged for my hard work keeps the fire inside burning. I cannot say thank you enough.” — LeAnne T., Environmental Studies major; Native American Studies minor
