Gail L. Maryott Endowed Scholarships

Gail L. Maryott was born in 1907 on the Maryott Ranch three miles north of Red Lodge, Montana. She attended Eastern Montana Normal School (now MSU Billings) and received her degree in education from the University of Montana. She later earned her master’s degree in education from Eastern Montana College. Gail’s career as an elementary teacher included positions at Roberts, Montana, and at Garfield and Broadwater schools in Billings, Montana. She retired in 1968 and then resided with her brother and sister in the home they built on a portion of the original Maryott homestead.

In 1988 Gail established the Gail L. Maryott Scholarship Fund to support students at MSU Billings majoring in music or education who were in need of financial assistance. Gail passed away on June 3, 1997, at age 90. Upon her death, the scholarship funds were endowed. The first scholarships were awarded in academic year 1989-1990.

Impact

“I was very happy and appreciative to learn that I was selected as a recipient to the Gail L. Maryott Elementary Education Endowed Scholarship. I am an Elementary Education major on my way to completing my second semester at Montana State University Billings. I am a non-traditional student, wife, and mother of two boys. I chose to attend this university because the Elementary Education program is stellar. Finding a balance between my education and family life has been a challenge, but a good education is well worth the sacrifices. I have really enjoyed meeting all of the wonderful faculty, employees, and students of MSU Billings. I am very excited to some day become a teacher, help teach our next generation, and make a substantial positive impact on this earth. By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened the financial burden that comes with a good education.” — Elizabeth F., Elementary Education major
