Joy and James Mariska

Joy and James Mariska

Joy and James Mariska are both Army veterans. Joy served three years active duty during the Vietnam era. James served a combined 34 years on active duty and in the Army Reserve, during a time span from Vietnam to the Iraq wars, retiring with the rank of Colonel. James also served over five years as the State of Montana’s Army Reserve Ambassador.

Both went on to have successful civilian careers. Joy worked over 30 years in public service initially with many years in law enforcement and ultimately retiring as Director of Youth Court Services in Billings. James worked over 30 years in the financial services industry. Both continue to be engaged in civic and veteran service organizations and other non-profit community efforts.

Joy and James both believe that their lives and careers have been enhanced because of the quality of education they obtained through the Montana University System. Though they had the GI Bill and other benefits, both worked full-time while taking full course loads in college. They funded this scholarship to offer financial assistance to fellow veterans as a way to acknowledge the sacrifice that the military requires of those who choose to serve. They hope the recipients of this scholarship will follow their example and in the future will also help other veterans when possible.
