Matz Properties, LLC Endowed Scholarship

Mike and Joan Matz have shown their support for MSU Billings in a variety of ways. Both Joan and Mike were active in the MSU Billings Alumni Golf Tournament and have been supportive of the MSU Billings Foundation Wine and Food Festival. Mike and Joan retired from Western Plains Machinery Co. and WP Rentals in 2009. He started working as a parts runner for the company in 1968, while attending then Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings). After he graduated in 1971 with an accounting degree, he was promoted to controller and worked his way up to vice president. He bought the company in 1985. As a former trustee of the MSU Billings Foundation and an alumnus, Mike has shared his resources as well as his time and knowledge. In 1997, Mike and Joan established the Matz Properties, LLC Endowed Scholarship. This endowed fund will provide scholarship assistance in perpetuity to MSU Billings business students with financial need. Mike passed away in October 2016. The first scholarship was awarded in academic year 1998-1999.

Impact

“Thank you so much for the generous gift of the Matz Properties, LLC Endowed Scholarship. I am so grateful for the help in working towards my goal of becoming a CPA. I am a non-traditional student, and am working full-time to support myself through school. The assistance is greatly appreciated… Thank you again for your generosity and support. I look forward to my upcoming year at MSU Billings and all that it will bring.” — Amy S., Accounting major
