Merry Jane Trewhella Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Merry Jane Trewhella and her family had a connection with Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings) that dated back to the 1970s when she and her son, Jim, came to Billings for a clinic at the Montana Center on Disabilities. Jim was involved in the Montana Center for many years and enrolled in college, graduating from MSU Billings in 1997. Merry Jane was involved with the Montana Center on Disabilities and was a lecturer in the MSU Billings College of Education where she taught elementary education methods before retiring in 2008. While at MSU Billings, Merry Jane touched many lives, inspiring young people to be free thinkers and look at every aspect. She also taught in School District #2 and was a longtime volunteer at and supporter of the Western Heritage Center. Sadly, Merry Jane died in a traffic accident on February 22, 2010, at age 59. In memory of Merry Jane and her contributions to MSU Billings, friends and colleagues at the Montana Center on Disabilities (now the Montana Center for Inclusive Education) established the Merry Jane Trewhella Memorial Scholarship Endowment in March 2010 to provide financial assistance to education majors at MSU Billings. The first scholarship was awarded in 2010-2011.
Impact
“I wanted to thank you for your generosity and support, and to let you know that I feel honored and truly appreciate receiving the Merry Jane Trewhella Memorial Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship came at the best moment while trying to reach my goal of earning a bachelor’s degree. I was uncertain if I could continue financially of obtaining that goal as my savings has been depleted. This scholarship will help pay for a great part of my college expenses. Thank you again for making it possible for me to continue with my education. I will make the best effort to achieve my goal.” — Victoria C., Elementary Education major
