Neil and Gleva Jussila Merit Endowed Scholarship

Neil and Gleva Jussila Merit Endowed Scholarship

Neil Jussila (jus’-il-ah) was born and raised in Butte, Montana. The son of Finnish parents, Jussila studied art at Montana State University Bozeman. He experienced Vietnam in the 1960s, first in an Army infantry battalion and later as a combat artist. In 1969, Jussila joined the faculty at Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings). The turning point in his life came when he saw an abstract painting and found it so compelling that he wanted — more than anything — to be able to paint in that style. Jussila has been a featured artist in over 82 national, refereed exhibitions that featured either his work alone or was featured in limited group shows. Were it not for his wife Gleva, much of Neil’s work would not have been possible. The Neil and Gleva Jussila Merit Endowed Scholarship exemplifies Gleva’s life, her strength, her sacrifice. It reflects her hope for a better culture, not limited by gender bias and discrimination. It recognizes scholarship and dependability on the highest level; it is a celebration of mind, spirit and courage. As a professor of art, among the most impressive students Jussila has worked with upper division, single mothers raising children at home. Against daunting odds, he has seen them succeed in science and math in pursuit of aspirations in medical service, science, and research. “To have the honor of working with such students has been a privilege,” stated Jussila. Awarded to a meritorious student at the end of their sophomore year, this scholarship recognizes the excellent organizational skills, focus, and a strong work ethic needed for achievement in vigorous, demanding courses. The first scholarship was awarded in academic year 2012-2013.

Impact

“Thank you for your support of Montana State University Billings through the Neil & Gleva Jussila Merit Endowed Scholarship. I am honored to receive your support as I return to college. This fall I will start work on a bachelor’s degree in biology. This degree will prepare me to apply to a graduate program for a master’s degree in physician assistant studies. Hover, it will also prepare me for many different options and possibilities that are also related to the medical field. Either way, I am excited to get started on my next professional step in my medical career… Once again I would like to say thank you for your support of women pursuing degrees in math and science fields. With your help and support, I feel more prepared to take on my dream of returning to college and advancing my career.” — Alyssa H., Biology major
