R.W. Bucher Endowed Scholarship
In 2016, Rena and Wayne established the R.W. Bucher Scholarship Endowment at MSU Billings.
Rena Bucher is the “R” in the R.W. Bucher Scholarship. It is her belief that a good education is extremely important to each person to be successful in life. Rena retired after 31 years in education both as a classroom teacher and a librarian. Because of circumstances in mid-life, she returned to Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings) as a non-traditional student to complete her library endorsement. Rena knows first-hand the difficulties of being a parent and trying to make ends meet while taking college courses. In this small way she hopes to encourage people in similar circumstances to pursue their dreams.
Wayne Bucher is the “W” in the R.W. Bucher Scholarship. He retired from the City of Billings. Wayne attended Northern Montana College for a couple of years using the G.I. Bill. Between college and high school, he served in the U.S. Navy for four years. Wayne believes that veterans then and now are sometimes over looked.
An education is important, and hopefully this scholarship will help in some way for the recipient to reach their life goals. Their generosity will provide opportunities for students who may be facing similar circumstances for years to come. The first scholarship was awarded in academic year 2017-2018.
Impact
“My returned journey back to college has been enlightening and difficult. I am a 43-year-old full-time single father of a 12-year-old boy. I realized my passion for education, teaching, and coaching 8 years ago, so I decided to go back and get my degree. I wake up every day thinking how fortunate I am to be able to mentor and teach students… I start my student teaching in the fall and will soon be licensed teacher. This will be a dream come true, and you two will both be a part of my amazing journey. Thank you from all of my heart!” – Vincent S., Elementary Education major
