Russell J. Foreman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Russell James Foreman graduated from Huntley Project High School, Huntley Project, Montana, in 1948. At age 17, he entered Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana, and played football and basketball. In 1952, he graduated from RMC with his bachelor’s degree and also met the love of his life, Dorothy Armstrong. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day in 1952 and married June 15 of the same year. Russ enter the U.S. Navy and served for four year. After discharge, he joined the faculty at Huntley Project High School and taught for seven years. While at HPHS, he completed his master’s degree at Eastern Montana College (now MSU Billings). He then moved to Great Falls, Montana, where he developed guidance programs in the high schools at Belt, Cascade, and Simms. Five years and four children later, the Foremans returned to Billings where Russ was hired by EMC as a counselor and test coordinator. After more than 30 years in education, Russ retired in 1986 and became active with Habitat for Humanity where he partnered with 13 families as they prepared to move into their new homes. Dorothy and Russ also sponsored a Habitat house in 1995 and dedicated it to their mothers. Russ passed away peacefully on March 12, 2012, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with Pleura Mesothelioma. Russ is preceded in death by their son, Rick. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and their three children, Randall, Deborah, and Diane. In memory of Russ and his passion for education, Dorothy established the Russell J. Foreman Memorial Scholarship Endowment at MSU Billings in October 2013 to help provide financial assistance to MSU Billings students. The first scholarship was awarded for academic year 2014-2015.

Impact

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the Russell J. Foreman Memorial Endowed Scholarship. As this year’s recipient, I am grateful for the opportunity. I am the mother of three little girls and am currently a third grade teacher going for my masters in School Counseling. Counseling has always been a passion of mine and I wholeheartedly feel like I was born to be involved in children’s lives. I work hard and look forward to continuing my education so I can help children and treat mental and emotional disorders and illnesses. Upon completion of my degree I hope to become a counselor in the school or private practice. Once again, thank you for giving me and my family the opportunity to advance in my career and follow my passions. Your generosity truly blessed me!” — Raschel G., School Counseling major
