Travis Gates Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Travis John Gates was born on December 26, 1987, in Lewistown, Montana. He moved to Billings, Montana, with his parents, John and Doreen, and sister, Emily, in 1991. Travis had a very active childhood, involving himself in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Youth Soccer, Youth Baseball, Junior Golf, hunting, fishing, and camping. He also played trumpet in the school band from fifth grade through ninth grade. Travis graduated from Billings West High School in 2006 where he played varsity golf and developed many lasting friendships. At the time of his passing he was studying at MSU Billings, finishing his degree in Environmental Studies with a Geography minor. Travis played four seasons of golf for the Yellowjackets, where he was a three-time GNAC Academic All-Conference Honoree. He also worked part-time at Briarwood Golf Course and Club where he enjoyed serving the many members and working with the staff. Travis enjoyed life and lived every day with an obvious joy that he shared with everyone around him. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, video games, movies with friends, camping and hiking, but his true passion in life was golf and helping others enjoy the game. His treasure in life was his relationships with family, friends, and the cat he loved so much. Travis was a generous, kindhearted, and loving person with more than a bit of the imp in his spirit. Travis passed away October 16, 2011, from injuries sustained in a car accident. His passing left a huge hole in the hearts and lives of those who knew him. His generous spirit keeps on giving, even in death, as he was committed to be an organ donor, which was accomplished through Life Center Northwest and six people now have a better life because of his remarkable gift. Travis spent his first year on the Yellowjacket Golf team as a walk-on, without a scholarship, and struggled to make it all work. This scholarship, established in 2012 in memory of Travis, is dedicated to helping those in similar circumstances so they can more fully enjoy the experience. The first scholarship was awarded in academic year 2012-2013.
