Westmoreland Coal Company and Penn Virginia Corporation Foundation Endowed Scholarship

Westmoreland Coal Company is the oldest independent coal company in the United States and an owner of highly clean and efficient independent power projects. The company’s coal production is from five surface mines and operations include coal mining in the Powder River Basin in Montana and lignite mining operations in Montana, North Dakota and Texas. Its current power operations include ownership of the two-unit Roanoke Valley coal-fired power plant in North Carolina and an interest in a natural gas-fired power plant in Colorado. Westmoreland is dedicated to meeting America’s dual goals of low-cost power and a clean environment. Westmoreland was established in 1854 in Pennsylvania as a supplier of coal for production of illuminating gas. In 1995, it moved its headquarters from Philadelphia to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Penn Virginia Corporation was formerly named Virginia Coal and Iron Company. In the past, Penn Virginia was a major shareholder of Westmoreland. It has been called a “sister” company of Westmoreland because it was the landholding and investment company and Westmoreland was the mining and operating company. Headquartered in Radnor, Pennsylvania, today Penn Virginia is an independent natural gas and oil company focused on the exploration, acquisition, development and production of reserves in five onshore regions of the U.S. In 2008, Westmoreland Coal Company and Penn Virginia Corporation Foundation established an endowed scholarship fund at MSU Billings to provide scholarships to MSU Billings students residing in the areas in which the companies operate. The first scholarship was awarded for academic year 2008-2009.
